As part of the agreement, Nissan and the State of Hawaii will develop plans to promote a charging infrastructure for EVs, as well as the deployment, operation and maintenance of a charging network. The partners also will work to coordinate the establishment of policies and help streamline the deployment of an EV infrastructure. Nissan is committing to bringing a supply of Nissan LEAF electric vehicles to Hawaii and readying the dealer body to sell and lease them to consumers.

The ordering process for Nissan LEAF will be prioritized based on when consumers submitted their original reservations online and by the consumer’s market. Over the next several weeks, reservation holders will begin to receive emails informing them how to submit an order. They will contact a dealer to negotiate their price and finalize the order for the purchase or lease of Nissan LEAF.

Once a consumer’s order has been agreed with a dealer it will be placed in sequence for production and delivery according to the consumer’s market. These future Nissan LEAF drivers will be informed of an estimated delivery timing upon completing the order process.

Today, the company is providing additional information to reservationists, including detailed factory and port installed options content. Currently, more than 18,600 people in the United States have made a reservation for the Nissan LEAF, drawing closer to the target of 20,000 reservations by December.

Michael Krumm and Peter Dumbreck had an action-packed race from the back of the grid to take 15th place and Seiji Ara and Max Nilsson finished in 21st after Nilsson briefly lost power during his run.

Warren Hughes had a strong run in the early part of the race, moving up from 16th on the grid to ninth before the pit stop.

“Both Jamie and I had good stints,” said Hughes. “I pitted early as I was behind another car and I wanted to get into the clear air. All in all we had a good race but it’s no good if you start from the back so we need to sort qualifying out as soon as we can.”

“We had the pace today but its hard work when you start from 16th,” added Campbell-Walter. “We picked up points which is great but now we need to get on top of qualifying. We have a test between now and the next race though to work on that. Everything went well during my stint and we had a great pit stop so we know what we need to do now.”

Henri Moser took the wheel of the No.3 Swiss Racing Team Nissan GT-R after Karl Wendlinger had put in a great drive from 14th through to eighth, and then to fifth briefly before he pitted. Henri continued the good job that Karl started and brought the car home in tenth place.

“I’m very happy with the result today,” said Moser. “I struggled with cold tyres for the first couple of laps of my run but after that I could push very hard. I had some drama when the No.5 Ford tipped me into a spin but he got punished later with a drive through. We are much more on the pace now and have definitely made some good progress so all in all we are happy. It is always good to score World Championship points.”

A new generation of Z owners and their families undertook the trip as a dry run for the revitalisation of the official South African Z Owners Club, which has gained momentum over the past 12 months around a hard core of genuine enthusiasts through regular breakfast runs, group trips to track days and other motorsport events. The ambitions of this growing club extends to building a national registry of Z owners via www.nissanownersclub.co.za, all committed to using their finely honed sports cars as they should be used while building strong social ties transcending the barriers of creed or culture through the common interest of passion for the Z and its rich heritage.

Nissan SA was pleased to lend its support to these endeavours and dispatched three vehicles, a 370Z Coupe and Roadster from Gauteng and one 370Z Roadster which travelled an epic 3600km round trip from Cape Town to attend the Emerald Coast rendezvous.

Arranged and led by Gauteng businessman Danie Volschenk, proprietor of Extreme Signs, and his dramatically turbocharged 350Z which produces 279kW (at the wheels) and is easily capable of turning his gumball 295/25 21-inch rear tyres to smoke when extended, the strong Gauteng contingent spread the thrill of this archetypal Japanese sports car right through three provinces on the sojourn down to sea level. Volschenk was accompanied by wife Corell and 5 year old son Matt, both of whom share his passion for the pleasure of enthusiastic driving as well as the focussed charms of Nissan’s Z in particular.

“This car is my baby, and whether popping down to the shops for bread and milk or undertaking a long journey like this one I always look forward to just getting in it and going for a drive. If I had the resources, I’d have a garage full of every generation of Z car built since the original 1969 240Z from the US – they are a very special family of spectacular machines,” comments Volschenk.

Of the wildly varying characters present, the majority seemed to attribute their adulation of the Z car primarily to its powerfully sculpted looks. Says Marius Kemp from Roodepoort, driving a stock 350Z Roadster; “It’s just one of those shapes which, while undeniably beautiful, also looks very manly – there’s no mistaking a Z for a hairdressers car – it wears it’s sports car heart on its sleeve!”

A popular choice for the tuner scene, not many of the Z cars in the convoy remained as they left the factory. In addition to a healthy smattering of high-end performance modifications, most vehicles were at least treated to 20” rims and some visual addenda, such as the GT2-like high-rise Veilside spoiler fitted to the car of youthful Maurice Roupell from Kyalami, who attended with his equally eye catching girlfriend Maxine Oosthuizen.

“I’ve had my car for 2 and a half years,” explains Roupell. “In fact, I got it because it was the first proper sports car I ever had the opportunity to sit in – when I was 14 we saw an original 350Z in a parking lot and the generous woman behind the wheel was convinced by my father to let me climb in and look around, and I’ve loved it ever since. For me, one of the most impressive elements of its performance is the consistency and strength of the stopping power the Brembo brakes deliver, especially on a track day where you need to be able to wipe off the speed produced by the gutsy V6 motor!”

For other club delegates, one of the most important elements of a pukka sports car which the Z most ably fulfils, is the glorious soundtrack of the big-capacity V6. Jason Hartington from Johannesburg runs a 350Z with the redeveloped HR engine which allows the motor to rev to higher limits; “It’s the sound that does it for me. Although my HR engine is a bit more powerful than standard, producing 240kW at the flywheel, it’s really the noise as it streaks around to the limiter that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up every single time.”

Although by no means a necessity of Z ownership, many attendees harboured long-term loyalty to the Nissan brand as well. Jaco Le Roux of Kyalami grew up on Nissan products, and when he started looking for a sports car with exceptional performance as well as a high dose of exclusivity he came upon the 1993 twin turbo 300ZX he attended the event in, and straight away traded his 200 STi in! “It was tough to find a good one, once I knew the 300ZX was what I wanted. A lot of them came in as grey imports without papers, but mine was through the official Nissan SA channels and has been lovingly maintained over the years. I use it as my daily driver, with a bike for when I absolutely must avoid messy Jo’Burg traffic conditions.”

Abie Cooper and grandson Matthew were so looking forward to the trip, that when their “Ultimate Yellow” Special Edition 370Z struck a large branch in the road from hometown Mokopane at 4 AM, resulting in two bent rims on the drivers’ side, they returned home and got in their Qashqai so as not to miss this special event. “We’ve been looking forward to this event for so long, that we’d have made the trip even if we’d had to use my 1400 half-tonner!” quips Cooper, who has reportedly owned and driven every Nissan model made available in SA since 1965 bar the Almera.

Last but not least, power-crazed Marius Erasmus from Pretoria can pump well over 400kW from his 350Z with the addition of a monster Garret GT37R turbocharger, imported from the US and specially converted to fit the strong V6 motor. “At the moment, it’s running about 360kW because I’ve got the boost pressure dialled back for the highway run. Next week I’ll change the ECU and fit bigger injectors – then we should be talking really big numbers, and it does all of this while remaining quite reliable!”

For three days this spectacular convoy and its affable crew of owners, friends, and family members brought more excitement than usual to the South Coast holiday towns it rumbled through. From this promising rejuvenation, the South African chapter of a Z owners’ club will grow from strength to strength as owners countrywide learn of the spirit of camaraderie their cherished sports car is a ticket to, and take the next step of ownership of such a special car by joining this fun-loving group of committed Z fanatics.

Nancy Reddy, Nissan SA product manager, concludes; “It’s been an absolute superb weekend for me, truly bonding with the actual, enthusiastic owners of the Z brand that I so passionately represent in SA. Spending this relaxed and fun time with the Z families awakened me to the fact that there is no way of truly articulating their passion for this superb vehicle but that they have “Z” running through their veins. I’m amazed at the breadth of people here, from young to old, of a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds – certainly broader than the target market we work so hard to identify in our painstaking research and analysis! But all of them are people drawn together by a shared love, the unadulterated sports car experience of Nissan Z ownership, and through their cars have found that relating to each other socially is a truly rewarding experience in itself.”

Four of the six Z®s appearing at the event, formerly known as the Monterey Historic Automobile Races, have significant racing histories – including SCCA National Championships, IMSA Manufacturers’ and Drivers’ Championship and victories at LeMans, Daytona and Sebring. Among the well-known drivers who have piloted these vehicles are John Morton, Bob Sharp, Elliott Forbes-Robinson, Sam Posey, Paul Newman and Steve Millen. The other two vehicles are a production 40th Anniversary Nissan 370Z and a specially prepared Brock Racing Enterprises 370Z tribute car.

In addition to the display vehicles, a number of vintage Nissan race cars have been entered in competition. John Morton will drive the #46 1970 Datsun 510 in the “1966 – 1972 Trans Am under 2 Liter Cars” class and a pair of 1985 Nissan GTPs (#83 and #84) owned by Toluca Lake Classic Motorsports will compete in the “1981 - 1989 FIA Mfg Championship & IMSA GTP” class.

Following are brief descriptions and histories of the Nissan display vehicles:

Brock Racing Enterprises Datsun 240Z
In 1970, when the Datsun 240Z arrived in the U.S, Peter Brock’s Southern California-based Brock Racing Enterprises (BRE) racing team helped to change the motorsports world by claiming the first SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) C Production National Championship for the Z over long-established champions from Germany and England.

Datsun 240Zs swept the top 3 spots with Bob Sharp in second and John McComb in third, in another BRE car, to firmly establish the Z® as a force in SCCA C Production racing. Datsun Z®s went on to win 10 straight SCCA C Production National Championships.

The 1970 and 1971 championship car, chassis #492, carried the now famous red, white and blue BRE livery penned by Peter Brock. Unfortunately chassis #492 was destroyed in a racing accident in the 1970s. This vehicle is a faithful replica of that car created by Ron Carter. It carries the BRE front and rear spoilers as well as the aerodynamic headlight covers. Under the hood is a BRE-built 2.4-liter inline-6 cylinder engine with the original triple Solex/Mikuni carburetors and the Nissan Competition intake manifold. Even the wheels are the original American LeMans magnesium pieces, so it is very close to the BRE 240Z that John Morton and the BRE team used to rock the racing world in 1970.

Bob Sharp Racing Datsun 240Z Chassis #00006
This car is the first Datsun 240Z imported into the U.S. It was the original display vehicle at the 1969 New York Auto Show. It later went to the Toronto Auto Show and was damaged when a spokesmodel sat on the roof for a photographer. The car was quickly pulled from the publicity tour and became the first race winning 240Z under the Bob Sharp Racing banner. This car appeared at every SCCA Runoffs from 1970 to 1978. Bob Sharp and the Z® won the SCCA C Production National Championship in 1972, 1973 and 1975. This car was raced as a 240Z, 260Z and 280Z. After its days at Bob Sharp Racing, it was owned and raced for many years by Jim Fitzgerald who had also raced it for Bob Sharp Racing.

When the car was a show car it was originally dark green and a patch of dark green paint was found during the restoration and has been maintained on the car to confirm its beginnings as the infamous “spokesmodel” car. It is owned by Dr. Allan Robbins and was restored by SharpSight Motorsports.

Bob Sharp Racing Datsun 240Z IMSA GTU
This car started its long racing career as a 1970 240Z prepped by Bob Sharp Racing (BSR) in Wilton, Connecticut. It was the second 240Z BSR used to compete in C Production in the SCCA after chassis #006. Bob Sharp won the SCCA C Production National Championship in 1972, 1973 and 1975. Bob Sharp also won the IMSA GTU Championship in 1975.

This car became a backup C Production car for Bob Sharp Racing when new race cars were created for the 1976 season. The new IMSA GTU car was destroyed in Sharp’s crash at Road Atlanta in April 1976. This car was pulled from backup C Production duty and quickly converted to IMSA GTU specs so Sharp could make the next race at Laguna Seca. He finished 2nd at Laguna Seca and won the next week at Ontario. Unfortunately, Sharp crashed again three weeks later at Lime Rock Park, ending his illustrious driving career.

A variety of drivers drove this car after Sharp’s retirement including Elliott Forbes Robinson, Sam Posey and Paul Newman. In 1978 this car held the all-time IMSA GTU lap records at Brainerd, Daytona, Hallett, Lime Rock, Mid America, Mid Ohio, Pocono, Sears Point, Road Atlanta and Talladega. The car is owned by Dr. Allan Robbins and was restored by SharpSight Motorsports.

Nissan Motorsports 300ZX
Nissan competed with the 300ZX in IMSA GTO and then GTS from 1989 to 1995, winning 19 races during that time. Steve Millen won the Driver’s Championship with the 300ZX in 1992 and 1994. Nissan also won the Manufacturer’s Championship in 1992 and 1994. In 1994 the Nissan Motorsports 300ZX took the overall win at the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring as well as 1st in class and 5th overall at the 24 Hours of LeMans. This car, Chassis #7 (the Sebring and LeMans winner), is owned by Millen.

After dominating the competition in 1994, IMSA banned the 300ZX’s twin turbo V6 engine. The 300ZXs raced in 1995 with a V8 engine, but they were never quite the same. Millen suffered career-ending injuries in a crash at Road Atlanta and the cars were retired at the end of the season.

Nissan 370Z BRE Tribute Coupe
In recognition of BRE’s multiple championships and the Z®’s first championship, Nissan North America teamed with Brock Racing Enterprises’ Peter Brock to create an updated rendition of the famous BRE livery, a specially modified 2010 Nissan NISMO 370Z Coupe. The new BRE 370Z is not just a show car, however, it’s built for the track as well. As is appropriate to commemorate the championship car, it was built to current SCCA T2 racecar regulations and will see track duty in 2010.

2010 Nissan 370Z 40th Anniversary Edition
To celebrate four decades of Z®, Nissan created a special, limited production version of the 2010 Nissan 370Z Coupe, the 370Z 40th Anniversary Edition. Limited to 1,000 units, the 370Z 40th Anniversary Edition starts out as a 370Z Touring model equipped with manual transmission and Sport Package (including SynchroRev Match™, front chin spoiler, rear spoiler, Nissan Sport Brakes, 19-inch Rays forged aluminum-alloy wheels and viscous limited-slip differential) and adds a premium “40th Graphite” exterior color and red leather-appointed interior.

Additional exclusive equipment includes a high-luster smoke wheel finish, red brake calipers and 40th Anniversary badges on the rear hatch and front shock tower brace. Inside, along with the red leather-appointed seats, are red door panel inserts, 40th Anniversary seatback with debossed logo, floormat logo embroidery, red stitching on the center stack, shift boot and kneepads, smooth leather steering wheel with red stitching and interior 40th commemorative plaque.
